Everyone deserves access to the mental health support they need, right when they need it. Starting July 16, 2022, anyone facing a mental health crisis can simply dial 988 and get connected right away to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 988 is designed to be an easy, three-digit phone number to remember.
When you dial 988, trained mental health counselors are ready at the other end. These trained crisis counselors know how to help and know what local resources might make a difference. The phone line is free, confidential and staffed all day and night, every day of the year.
It’s never too early or too late to seek help. If you’re ever feeling like you need help with a mental health or substance use crisis – either for yourself or to help someone you care about – simply dial 988. It is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible support.
The current Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, even after 988 is launched nationally.
